Yonsei University

Seoul, South Korea

Korea's pioneering private research university, pairing a world-leading academic medical centre with frontier strength in materials, AI and nanoscience.

Founded on the twin legacies of Korea's first modern hospital and its earliest private college, Yonsei University has grown into one of Asia's most productive research institutions, anchored at its Sinchon campus in Seoul. Its health system, built around Severance Hospital, is a global reference point for robotic surgery, clinical trials and digital medicine, while its colleges of engineering and science publish prolifically in energy storage, semiconductors, nanomaterials and chemistry. Yonsei hosts major national research infrastructure, including the Institute for Basic Science Center for NanoMedicine and a Max Planck partnership centre, and its faculty regularly carry Korea's top scientific honours. The university's research culture is notably translational: solid-state battery chemistry moves towards pouch-format cells, hospital AI is deployed on live wards, and biomedical devices progress through large-animal models. With deep government programme funding and expanding international recruitment, Yonsei sits at the centre of Korea's scientific ambitions.

October 2026

Inside the Yonsei centre teaching magnets to speak to neurons

The IBS Center for NanoMedicine on Yonsei's Seoul campus continues to push nano-magnetogenetics, the wireless control of brain circuits, a decade after its founding.

September 2026

Mucosa-mimicking material tames harmful oral bacteria while sparing the good

A Yonsei-led team reports in Advanced Materials a biomaterial that blocks biofilm formation by pathogenic microbes without wiping out the beneficial species around them.

September 2026

A battery that cleans up carbon dioxide while it discharges

Yonsei chemists report a self-powered zinc-CO2 battery that converts carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide under industrially relevant conditions.

August 2026

Food waste reborn as heat-storing membranes for smarter buildings

Yonsei researchers turn mixed food waste into biochar-graphene paper membranes that store thermal energy and manage moisture, reported in the journal Biochar.

August 2026

Korean phase 3 trial settles the case for carboplatin in aggressive breast cancer

An 868-patient trial led from Yonsei Cancer Center shows adding carboplatin lifts event-free survival in early triple-negative breast cancer, published in Annals of Oncology.

July 2026

Autism screening AI, gene-variant atlases and nasal biomarkers earn national honours

Three Yonsei College of Medicine professors feature in Korea's top 30 health R&D achievements for 2026, spanning digital psychiatry, cancer genetics and rhinology.

June 2026

National leader grant backs Yonsei's push to stack chips with 2D semiconductors

Professor Jong-Hyun Ahn's group wins a 2026 National Research Foundation Leader Research Program award for high-performance 3D integrated devices built on two-dimensional materials.

May 2026

Severance switches on round-the-clock vital-sign monitoring for every ward

The Yonsei hospital's PRISM system standardises data from disparate medical devices and alerts rapid response teams the moment an inpatient's signs turn abnormal.

May 2026

Yonsei medics begin building an AI that screens for autism through the eye

A government-backed platform led from Severance Hospital will combine eye fundus images with behavioural indicators to screen for autism traits in clinics and at home.

April 2026

Severance becomes the first hospital anywhere to log 50,000 robotic surgeries

Two decades after introducing robot-assisted surgery to Korea, Yonsei's flagship hospital reaches a world-first milestone, with single-port procedures now almost half its robotic caseload.

April 2026

A hydrogen alarm that sleeps until the moment a leak begins

Yonsei engineers report a palladium cantilever switch that draws picoamp standby current and closes only when hydrogen is present, published in Microsystems and Nanoengineering.

March 2026

Robots learn to feel what their cameras cannot see

Yonsei and University of Southern California researchers pair a depth camera with a soft printed tactile array so robots can map millimetre-scale objects when vision fails.

February 2026

Hospital staff turn AI builders in Yonsei health system's innovation challenge

Fifty-five employees across nineteen teams built deployable AI agents for clinical and administrative problems in a month-long competition across Yonsei's hospitals.

Yonsei and Samsung Medical Center researchers report in Nature Biomedical Engineering a wireless, biodegradable polymer implant that blocks pain signals on demand.

January 2026

A stubborn brain tumour begins in tissue that looks perfectly normal

Severance and KAIST researchers report in Science that IDH-mutant glioma originates from mutation-bearing progenitor cells in apparently healthy cortex, reshaping ideas about surgery and early detection.

December 2025
