A battery that cleans up carbon dioxide while it discharges

Yonsei chemists report a self-powered zinc-CO2 battery that converts carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide under industrially relevant conditions.

Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide into useful feedstocks is one of the most actively pursued routes to closing the carbon loop, but most laboratory systems demand a steady external power supply, which undercuts their energy case. Work from Professor Dongil Lee's laboratory in Yonsei's Department of Chemistry, highlighted by the department in September 2026 and published through the American Chemical Society, takes aim at that constraint with a self-powered zinc-CO2 battery.

The device couples zinc oxidation with the reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, meaning the cell generates electrical energy and performs the conversion in the same electrochemical package. Carbon monoxide matters because it is a workhorse intermediate: combined with hydrogen as synthesis gas, it feeds established industrial routes to fuels and chemicals, so a cell that produces it while generating rather than consuming power addresses the energy-balance objection head on.

What distinguishes the Yonsei work is the emphasis on industrially relevant conditions rather than idealised laboratory settings, a framing that signals attention to the gas compositions, current demands and stability requirements a practical system would face. For a field often criticised for benchmark results that evaporate outside the glovebox, demonstrations of CO2-to-CO conversion under realistic operating regimes are a meaningful step towards electrochemical carbon management that pays for itself.
