Severance switches on round-the-clock vital-sign monitoring for every ward

The Yonsei hospital's PRISM system standardises data from disparate medical devices and alerts rapid response teams the moment an inpatient's signs turn abnormal.

Hospital wards generate torrents of physiological data, but much of it sits trapped on individual devices that speak different formats and must be checked screen by screen. Severance Hospital, Yonsei's flagship medical centre, moved to close that gap in May 2026 with the full-scale launch of PRISM, a monitoring system co-developed with the medical solutions firm ACK that tracks inpatients' blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation continuously across every ward.

The system's core contribution is unglamorous but consequential: it standardises data from devices regardless of manufacturer and presents it on a single screen, replacing vital-sign checks that previously happened at intervals of up to eight hours with continuous collection. Early cases suggest the payoff. In March, a rapid response team reached a patient in his seventies three minutes after his oxygen saturation dropped, and another patient was examined within five minutes of falling blood pressure and heart rate being detected.

Severance formed the task force behind the system in February of the previous year, building on its established WeSave rapid response team of seven specialists and fifteen nurses. The hospital expects fewer manual data-entry tasks, faster coordination and remote status checks during night shifts, and plans to layer AI-based prediction on the accumulating data so deterioration can be anticipated rather than merely detected. For researchers in clinical informatics, an all-ward deployment at this scale is a significant real-world testbed.
