Steffenson holds Minnesota's endowed chair in cereal disease resistance and co-directs the Stakman-Borlaug Center for Sustainable Plant Health. He assembles global collections of wild wheat and barley relatives, mining them for rust and blight resistance genes with collaborators on five continents, work that protects staple grain harvests from emerging pathogens.
