Rolston chairs one of America's largest physics departments and was a co-founder of the Joint Quantum Institute, the flagship partnership between Maryland and NIST. His ultracold atom and Rydberg physics experiments underpin quantum networking and sensing, and he helps lead national efforts to train the emerging quantum workforce.

Hultman founded and directs the Center for Global Sustainability, whose analyses of national climate commitments inform the Paris Agreement process. He has advised United States federal and subnational climate strategy, co-leads major assessments of high ambition decarbonisation pathways, and convenes governments, researchers and civil society across continents.
