Pirmohamed leads the UK's foremost pharmacogenetics programme, showing how genetic testing can prevent adverse drug reactions. He directs Liverpool's Wolfson Centre for Personalised Medicine and co-led the European PREPARE trial, which found that a 12 gene panel substantially reduced side effects, evidence now informing NHS and international prescribing policy.

Through the Unitaid funded LONGEVITY programme and global consortia such as LEAP, he works to bring durable and affordable medicines to low and middle income countries.
