Amina Helmi
Helmi uses data from ESA's Gaia mission to reconstruct how the Milky Way was assembled, co-discovering the Gaia-Enceladus merger that reshaped our galaxy's history. A Spinoza Prize laureate, she received the 2026 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics with colleagues in Cambridge and Strasbourg, reflecting deeply collaborative work across European astronomy.
Erik Frijlink
Frijlink chairs pharmaceutical technology at the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy, where his dry powder inhalation platforms became the Novolizer and Genuair inhalers used by hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide. His group works with clinicians and industry on inhaled therapies for Parkinson's disease and respiratory infections, and he received a royal decoration in 2024.
Mladen Popovic
Popovic leads Groningen's Faculty of Arts and its renowned Qumran Institute for Dead Sea Scrolls research.
