Bruce Whitelaw
Whitelaw applies precise genome editing such as CRISPR to livestock, creating pigs and other farmed animals resistant to costly infectious diseases. He led the Roslin Institute from 2020 to 2025 and works with breeding companies, regulators and international partners to move gene editing from laboratory proof of concept toward practical farm and food system use.
Bernd Schroers
Schroers works in mathematical physics on topological solitons, gauge theory and quantum gravity, and leads the School of Mathematics. His geometric analysis of magnetic skyrmions connects pure mathematics with condensed matter and spintronics research, and his collaborations span Edinburgh, Julich and Danish groups working on next generation magnetic data storage concepts.
Cait MacPhee
MacPhee is a biological and soft matter physicist studying protein self assembly, amyloid fibrils and microbial biofilms. Through the National Biofilms Innovation Centre she connects physics laboratories with healthcare, water and manufacturing partners, quantifying the economic burden of biofilms. Appointed CBE for services to women in physics, she also advises Scottish science policy.
