Mathias Munschauer
RNA biologist who directs Heidelberg's Department of Molecular Virology. With collaborators at the Broad Institute he produced the first atlas of host proteins bound to SARS-CoV-2 RNA in infected human cells, then showed how the host protein SND1 partners with viral NSP9 to drive replication, opening new antiviral strategies for RNA viruses.
Frauke Melchior
Molecular biologist renowned for the discovery of SUMO, a small protein modifier that regulates thousands of cellular proteins, a finding that opened an entire field of cell biology with implications for cancer and neurodegeneration. As Rector for 2023 to 2029 she leads Germany's oldest university and its Excellence Initiative strategy.
