Research at University of Cologne is a global undertaking: the university co-authors with 1,081 institutions in 80 countries, and international collaborators appear on 44% of its output.

Its largest single research relationship is with Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf in Germany, at 2,373 joint works. Across the network, five-year output reaches 35,490 co-authored works.
