ZEUS · Zero/low Emission Aircraft Integration into Future European Air Traffic System

HORIZONStatus: SIGNED1 September 202628 February 2029EU funding €1,998,684Call HORIZON-SESAR-2025-DES-ER-03

The goal of ZEUS is to develop an integrated framework for the modelling, management, and assessment of the impact of next generation zero/low emission aircraft on the future European ATM network. This goal can be translated into the following specific objectives:1. To define an operational framework and a set of representative use cases that guide the assessment of the impact of zero/low emission aircraft on the future ATM system. This includes the characterisation of future operational environments with mixed aircraft fleets, the identification of integration challenges for novel zero/low emission aircraft, and the definition of performance indicators and evaluation criteria to assess the impact and benefits of potential solutions.2. To model the future operational context of mixed-fleet air traffic by developing BADA1-like performance models for zero/low emission aircraft and forecasting the evolution of traffic demand, considering factors such as shorter routes and an increased number of flights to accommodate passenger growth, in order to define representative scenarios of the future ATM system for the 2035+ horizon.3. To propose and design a set of measures that enable the integration of zero/low emission aircraft in a mixed-fleet ATM environment, including the strategic redesign of departure and arrival procedures (SID/STAR) and the development of a DST for pre-tactical ATFCM.4.To quantify the impact of future mixed-fleet operations on ATM, especially on traffic synchronisation in terminal and en-route airspace, and evaluate the benefits of the proposed integration measures.5. To create the conditions for the transfer of the project results to the subsequent stages of the R&I cycle by outlining a new SESAR Solution, the ZEUS Framework for New Entrants Integration, that supports the safe, efficient, and coordinated integration of zero/low emission aircraft into the future ATM system.
