SIROCCO · translating knowledge of particleS chemistry Impact to particle Resuspension phenOmenon into HVAC systems design and management deCision suppOrt
"Good indoor air quality must become a basic human right- for our health- "" ! Identification of primary air pollution sources and quantification, impact on health and HVAC systems for good indoor air quality (IAQ) have been the focus of many funded-research, but one major source has been neglected: the particle resuspension. Indeed, particle resuspension within ventilation ducts of HVAC systems can elevate occupational health risks if it introduces particles, such as fine dust, allergens, microbes, and toxic pollutants, into indoor air. SIROCCO advances the understanding of particle resuspension to support future innovative HVAC applications and research for the sake of good indoor IAQ. SIROCCO offers 3 main innovations: (i) the knowledge and the experimental protocol to generate deposits to understand the correlation between particle resuspension behavior, chemical and physical characteristics of particles and their ""history"" reflecting various environmental conditions, (ii) a one-stop-platform enabling the tracking of micro/nano-particles at different distances from the initial deposit to measure particles resuspension from the pipe wall to their aerosolized form, (iii) a multicriteria decision tree integrating various influencing factors, such as deposit history, environmental conditions, airflow conditions, temporal management issues (e.g., complex airflow disruptions), systems design challenges (e.g., influence of singularities) to guide integrators and operators of HVAC to efficiently design and maintain HVAC systems.SIROCCO is a multidisciplinary project requiring the knowledge of different expertise such as particle resuspension, particle physics and chemistry, field observation, airflow dynamics and its application to HVAC systems. SIROCCO contributes to the objectives set by the Zero pollution action plan of the EU Green Deal, WHO European Environment and Health Process by supporting healthy living and working environments.""
