SENSEI (Societal-ready safE and transparent humaN-technology interactionS for the automatEd mobIlity ecosystem) will develop safe, inclusive and trusted Human-Technology Interaction (HTI) systems for Level 2–3 automated driving. Current assistance and automation features often fail to adapt to the diversity of drivers and lack transparency, leading to distraction, confusion during handovers, and low public trust. The project’s objective is to create adaptive HTI solutions and training methods that respond to real driver needs, improve safety and usability, and strengthen societal trust in automation. SENSEI will achieve this through five main actions: i) Co-designing solutions with diverse groups of drivers to ensure inclusiveness and acceptance; ii) Developing adaptive interfaces and personalised training methods that reduce cognitive stress; iii) Validating these solutions in simulators and real-world pilots across four European countries; iv) Providing business models, upgradeability guidelines and policy recommendations to support industrial uptake and certification; v) Embedding a Societal Readiness methodology with tools to monitor trust, inclusiveness and safety throughout the project.By combining engineering innovation with social sciences and humanities expertise, SENSEI directly addresses the requirements of the Societal Readiness Pilot. The project contributes to the work programme’s objectives by delivering self-learning, adaptive HTI strategies, preventing crashes linked to mode confusion, advancing assessment methods, developing new training approaches, and ensuring responsiveness to diverse social needs. SENSEI will support the EU’s Vision Zero target of eliminating road fatalities by 2050 and strengthen European leadership in safe, human-centred vehicle automation.
