SAEGE · Support for the activities of the European Group on Ethics (EGE) by European Academia and Ethics Bodies

SAEGE is a Horizon Europe project that enhances the integration of ethical insight into EU policymaking in response to rapid developments in science and technology. The overall goal of SAEGE is to support the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) in its mission to advise the European Commission (EC) on all aspects of EU policy and legislation where ethical, societal, and fundamental rights dimensions intersect with the development of science and new technologies. As innovations increasingly affect social norms, human rights, and the environment, SAEGE helps ensure that ethics remains central to science governance in the EU. SAEGE provides structured, ethics-based evidence and analysis to inform the EGE’s advice. This includes literature reviews, expert consultations, stakeholder workshops, and full evidence review reports that translate diverse inputs into policy-relevant ethical assessments. The project aligns with the EGE’s 2021 call for ethics rooted in “comprehensive and pluralistic thinking,” informed by sound science, critical analysis, and inclusive societal debate. To support this vision, SAEGE is developing the EGE Et Alia Advisory Network (EGEAN), which connects the EGE with actors in the ethics and science advise landscape. The EGEAN will support SAEGE’s work through stakeholder mapping, an online hub, and ethics policy briefings. To anticipate future issues, SAEGE will also implement a horizon scanning and early alert system using tools such as social media trend analysis, web scraping, and text mapping. These insights will be distilled into Horizon Scanning Briefs to inform proactive, ethically grounded EU policymaking.
