ROBOTOMY aims to redefine the ancient art of stereotomy through robotic collaboration, material innovation, and architectural intelligence. The project envisions a new constructive paradigm that merges cultural heritage with advanced manufacturing, aligning with the goals of the European Green Deal and Industry 5.0. Through the development of prefabricated, interlocking stereotomic modules made from perlite and 3D-printed stone composites, ROBOTOMY introduces an environmentally sustainable, modular, and robot-compatible construction system. A multi-robot collaborative platform, coordinated by AI-driven task execution software, will automate the assembly of complex vaulted structures, improving precision, safety, and efficiency while reducing waste and costs. The consortium – led by POLIBA, with key partners System 3E, ETH Zürich, CSR, POLIMI, Flanders Make, and Day One – combines excellence in architecture, robotics, and materials science. Over 36 months, the project will design, fabricate, and robotically assemble full-scale stereotomic prototypes, demonstrating the feasibility of autonomous, adaptive construction systems. By integrating architectural design, material research, and collaborative robotics into a unified workflow, ROBOTOMY will deliver a scalable, sustainable, and culturally resonant construction methodology – bridging the gap between advanced digital fabrication and real-world architectural applications. ROBOTOMY contributes to the EIC Pathfinder Challenge “Towards autonomous robot collectives in construction” by integrating architectural design, sustainable materials, and collaborative robotics into a unified construction methodology.
