RenoVisor · Engagement of Citizens Into Renovation Decision Processes Using Social Science, Building Simulation and Participatory Advisory Tools

To meet the EU’s ambitious climate and energy efficiency goals, the rate of deep building renovations must increase by an order of magnitude. However, insufficient accessible information and unclear cost-benefit insights discourage homeowners from taking action. Moreover, decision-making varies widely depending on whether renovations are undertaken by individual families, multi-family co-owners, or entire neighborhoods. The RenoVisor project supports the acceleration of decarbonizing Europe’s building stock by empowering these 3 target groups to make informed, participatory decisions about building renovations and switching to green energy. It does so through 3 innovative digital tools that combine advanced building simulations, behavior modeling, and participative advisory tools. These tools overcome key barriers—such as financing challenges, the disruption factor, and decision-making complexity—by providing tailored renovation plans that integrate technical, economic and social aspects. For co-owned buildings consensus-building features help the owners to reach an agreement. Special emphasis is placed on addressing energy and transport poverty, ensuring that vulnerable households can access renovation pathways that enhance energy efficiency and mobility without compromising affordability. Piloted in over 10 000 households across Spain, Ireland, and the Netherlands, the user-friendly interfaces will encourage exploration and personalization of solutions, while a sales funnel–inspired design guides users toward positive renovation decisions, increasing the conversion from awareness to action.By offering multi-stage renovation planning and clear visualization of the increased climate change resilience as well as ecological and financial benefits of renovation measures, RenoVisor enhances decision-making while minimizing disruption. This comprehensive approach supports Europe’s green transition and paves the way for inclusive, sustainable and resilient communities.
