REMEDYOS · CLIMATE-RESILIENT INTEGRATED BIO- AND NATURE-BASED REMEDIATION OF PFAS-POLLUTED SITES

HORIZONStatus: SIGNED1 June 202631 May 2030EU funding €3,997,393Call HORIZON-CL6-2025-01

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are among the most challenging environmental threats in Europe, with over 23,000 contaminated sites undermining ecosystem resilience and public health. Current remediation technologies are costly, energy-intensive, and poorly adapted to complex, multi-contaminant scenarios, especially under climate-induced stress. REMEDYOS addresses these gaps by developing the first European Integrated BioRemediation Platform (IBioRP), leveraging synergistic fungal-bacterial consortia, aquatic and terrestrial phytoremediation, and AI-driven digital tools. The project will select and map PFAS-polluted and reference sites across diverse EU regions, applying harmonized protocols and engaging local stakeholders. Advanced multi-compartment characterization, combining physico-chemical, omics, and biodiversity analyses, will inform the development of tailored, site-specific bio- and nature-based solutions. REMEDYOS will validate its approach in a real pilot site (TRL5) and replicate it in four additional European case studies, assessing environmental, economic, and social impacts. Citizen science and stakeholder engagement will ensure co-design, monitoring, and policy relevance. The IBioRP is designed for climate resilience, scalability, and adaptability, enabling robust restoration of ecosystem services and biodiversity. By integrating standardized protocols, multi-taxa biotechnologies, and digital monitoring, REMEDYOS will accelerate regulatory uptake and public trust, supporting the Zero Pollution Action Plan and Nature Restoration Law. The multidisciplinary consortium ensures scientific excellence and practical impact, positioning REMEDYOS as a reference for sustainable, climate-resilient remediation of polluted European ecosystems.
