RE-CLIQS · REplaceable Chiplet LInks for Quantum Scaling

HORIZONStatus: SIGNED1 April 202631 March 2028EU funding €2,499,888Call HORIZON-EIC-2025-TRANSITIONOPEN

Quantum computers could transform industries and society, but to reach their full potential they must scale to millions of qubits. Current superconducting quantum processors (QPUs) are limited by several scaling factors, amongst which fabrication yield and packaging complexity: a single defect can compromise an entire QPU, and monolithic scaling quickly becomes cost-prohibitive. To overcome these barriers, large modular upgradeable, repairable QPUs must be developed. In this project, QuantWare aims to demonstrate replaceable chiplet-to-chiplet connections for superconducting QPUs, a breakthrough that allows scalable QPUs to be built from replaceable pre-characterised chiplets. This modularity enables faulty chiplets to be swapped out, significantly reducing cost and waste while supporting larger, more reliable QPUs. When combined with QuantWare’s patented and EICA-supported VIO-technology, this approach unlocks technology scalable to millions of qubits. This will be done by developing both replaceable connections for a testing card to precharacterise chiplets cryogenically, and replaceable connections from the chiplets to the VIO-stack. QuantWare will work on its previous knowledge on fabricating 3D chip connections, proof of concepts and IP on replaceable connections and recent in-house chiplet-to-chiplet demonstrations. We will establish both the technical feasibility and the market relevance of modular, replaceable QPUs. Alongside technological validation, partnerships with system integrators, large companies and research labs will provide real-world testing and market input.By reducing replacement cost, increasing fabrication yield, and enabling upgradeability, replaceable chiplet connections are expected to shorten the path to utility-scale QPUs by multiple development cycles. This project positions Europe at the forefront of quantum computing and lays the foundation for a sustainable, scalable quantum computing supply chain via an open architecture approach.
