PILOT-ABP · Pilot plant for environmentally friendly animal by-products industries

FP7Status: CLOSED1 June 201431 May 2017EU funding €1,789,323

A by-product is defined as a secondary product obtained during the manufacture of a principal commodity. Animal by-products (ABPs) are materials of animal origin that people do not consume. Animal by-products represent a significant part of the biowaste stream and disposal options are limited and highly regulated. Over 20 million tons emerge annually from EU from slaughterhouses, plants producing food for human consumption, dairies and as fallen stock from farms. In Europe, there is an increasing requirement for selecting solutions which demonstrate the best available technique for the treatment of animal by-product wastes. The PILOT-ABP project aims at developing new eco-innovative technologies associated to the animal by-products process, which allow on one hand an environmental improvement of the process, thanks to a more efficient consumption of the energy used in the process and a better recovery of raw materials, with a related decreasing in wastes production, and on the other hand an increasing of the added value of the obtained products which leads to a better financial profitability of SMEs.The specific objectives of the project are:Application of new extraction technologies in order to obtain animal oils with higher oleic acid content.Obtaining of biodiesel from animal oils for partial substitution of use crude fuels use and decreasing of pollutant emissions.Application of low temperature pyrolysis techniques to meat and fish protein flour for bio-oil obtaining, as a source of chemical products, and coal for reducing the consumption of natural energy sources.Obtaining of gelatin and collagen for manufacturing functional and biodegradable biopolymers more ecological and sustainable.
