Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a growing public health crisis, affecting millions of people worldwide with a steady cognitive decline. Current treatments offer only temporary symptomatic relief and fail to address the underlying disease progression. As the population ages, the prevalence of AD is expected to double by 2050, placing an immense burden on caregivers and healthcare systems struggling to provide long-term care.AlzeCure, a clinical-stage biotech company, has developed ACD856, a first-in-class small molecule designed to treat AD by enhancing neurotrophic pathways such as Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which are essential for maintaining neuronal health and cognitive function. ACD856 not only improves cognitive abilities but also has the potential to modify the course of the disease, a breakthrough that sets it apart from existing treatments. Administered orally, it efficiently crosses the blood-brain barrier and has demonstrated a strong safety profile in Phase I trials.AlzeCure plans to advance ACD856 through a Phase II clinical trial under the EIC Accelerator project, aiming to demonstrate its efficacy and further refine its GMP manufacturing processes. This will trigger an out-licensing agreement with a major pharmaceutical partner, paving the way for a market launch by 2033. The partnership strategy includes milestone payments of up to €250M, positioning ACD856 for blockbuster potential with projected peak annual sales of €7 billion by 2037.AlzeCure's work aligns with the European Union’s priorities under the European Health Union initiative, aiming to reduce the social and economic burden of AD. ACD856 has the potential to improve patient outcomes, lower healthcare costs by delaying the need for long-term care, and strengthen Europe's leadership in innovative, disease-modifying therapies.
