MIMIR · Miniaturised MEMS-based spectrometers for the Mid-Infrared spectral region
In MIMIR, starting from a key BROMEDIR project result (The BROMEDIR FTIR portable spectrometer), we will develop a new generation of miniaturised spectrometers, eventually leading to the commercialisation of a product line of handheld spectral analysers operating in the mid-infrared (MIR) region and corresponding software applications. Within MIMIR, we will: a) work on the technological maturation of the spectrometer optical core engine, through stabilizing and enhancing the performance of the MEMS PIC yield, testing and automating the spectrometer calibration process, b) work on optimization of the BROMEDIR spectrometer performance at the system level, through efficient co-integration of the PIC MEMS chip with a suitable light source, a photodetector, the main processing unit and the power management sub-system, c) work on reducing the overall analyser size, aiming 5x10x20 cm for the whole device, while the BROMEDIR spectrometer alone measures 12x12x11 cm, not including the light source and sample accessories, d) develop chemometric models and software interfaces for the analysis of the measured raw data, for two application areas: soil health assessment and human health diagnostics, e) undertake the necessary activities towards increasing the business readiness for the spectrometer and the product line based on it. The previous project result is the main component of MIMIR.
