LiverAid · Perfusable 3D-Bioprinted Human Liver-on-a-Chip with Silk–dECM Bioink for Biopharmaceutics

LiverAid aims to develop a next-generation bioengineered human liver-on-chip platform to improve the predictability of drug toxicity testing and disease modeling. This system integrates advanced 3D bioprinting with smart hydrogels, patient-derived liver cells, and perfusable microfluidics to more accurately replicate the human liver microenvironment. By combining biofabrication with embedded sensors and real-time readouts, LiverAid will allow continuous monitoring of key physiological and biochemical markers, such as albumin production, urea synthesis, cytochrome P450 activity, and inflammatory responses. The platform will be validated against conventional 2D/3D models using known hepatotoxins and rescue agents. This project aligns with the EU’s goals for reducing animal testing and improving personalized medicine approaches. It will also provide the applicant with hands-on training in organ-on-chip engineering, biosensing, and ML-assisted data analysis at the host institution in Germany, further strengthening their academic career and European research integration.
