ISP · The International Supernova Program (ISP)

I describe the International Supernova Program (ISP), a large study of cosmic explosions, to be carried out during my reintegration period. The project objectives are to discover and study a large sample of supernovae (SNe) - exploding massive stars - in order to learn about their properties and understand supernova physics and their impact on cosmic processes, such as star and galaxy formation. The project combines large surveys for SNe using novel methods, with a coordinated follow-up and analysis programs. An important component is the establishment of a long term connection between the absorbing institute and leading research centers at the US via joint construction of a new survey instrument for the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF), a forthcoming large supernova and transient survey. Technology transfer and new educational opportunities are described. The project is expected to lead to significant progress in our understanding of these important objects, and at the same time to introduce a new area of research to the host institution, fostering long-term collaboration with other excellence centers. Supported by reintegration funding, the project should ultimately lead to the establishment of a new research group headed by the PI.
