ISAC-SS · Unleashing Integrated Sensing and Communication Pontentials by Exploiting Shared Scatterers in Millimeter-Wave Systems
In the next-generation millimeter-Wave (mm-Wave) networks, sensing is assumed a vital role in various applications, including transport systems, smart cities, and public safety. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is identified as a key technology to achieve ubiquitous sensing with communication systems, where the convergence of sensing and communication functionalities on shared hardware holds the promise of reduced costs, enhanced spectral and energy efficiency, and reduced latency. Before incorporating ISAC into next-generation communication standards, however, the sensing and communication capacities of ISAC should be further improved. The 2-year MSAC Postdoctoral Fellowship, ISAC-SS, seeks to unlock the full potential of ISAC systems by exploiting the shared scatterers in communication and sensing channels. The state-of-the-art (SoA) in ISAC signal processing has largely overlooked this critical element, leaving room for performance improvement. Research Objectives (ROs) are as follows: RO1: Establish fundamental performance limits for ISAC systems leveraging shared scatterers. RO2: Designing beamforming (BF) and signal reception algorithms that enhance ISAC performance by exploiting shared scatterers. RO3: Conduct hardware experiments and create a dataset with diverse shared scatterer configurations for model and algorithm verification. By addressing these ROs, ISAC-SS aims to propel the field of ISAC to new heights, ultimately improving the quality and reliability of infrastructure and contributing to safer transport systems. The collaboration between Tampere University (TAU) and Arizona State University (ASU) bolsters the vision of establishing an independent academic career dedicated to advancing ISAC technology of the researcher.
