INMUNET · Interwoven Musical Networks: England, the Netherlands, and Spain, 1520–1630

INMUNET addresses a critical gap in early modern musicology: the overlooked triangular musical exchange between England, Spain, and the Netherlands (1520–1630). While Anglo-European musical relations are well-studied, the specific role of Spain, with the Netherlands as a political and commercial ally, remains unexplored. This project employs an interdisciplinary methodology, integrating historical musicology, digital humanities, and archival research to achieve three objectives: first, to map the agents and networks enabling musical transmission; second, to analyse the adaptation of circulated repertoires and performance practices; and third, to assess cultural responses—from appropriation to resistance—within their socio-political contexts. Moving beyond the state of the art, INMUNET utilises Social Network Analysis and comparative musicology to examine sources like diplomatic correspondence, music prints, and performance records, uncovering previously invisible patterns of cultural transfer. Hosted by Newcastle University, this project will not only redefine our understanding of pan-European musical exchange but also significantly enhance my profile as an independent scholar. It will equip me with advanced digital and analytical skills, strengthen my publication record, and open pathways to permanent academic positions and future funding opportunities, while fostering public engagement through open-access data and collaborative dissemination.
