GREEN-X · GREEN-X: Advancing Sustainable Polymer Innovation through Circular Feedstocks, Greener Materials, and Industrial Collaboration

HORIZONStatus: SIGNED1 March 202628 February 2030EU funding €395,790Call HORIZON-MSCA-2024-SE-01

The Green-X project is vibrant community for transferring scientific, technological, and industrially relevant knowledge in polymer chemistry and engineering, to advance the implementation of more sustainable materials in the plastic and coatings industries. Secondments will unite intersectoral and interdisciplinary efforts to explore alternative carbon feedstocks – such as humins from biorefinery and polyester waste – transforming them into high-value aromatic functional chemicals and polymers. For this, the excellent academic partners – University of Aveiro (UAveiro), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris (Mines Paris PSL) and Fraunhofer WKI (WKI) - will team up with the innovative industrial companies with a focus on sustainable products – Worlée Chemie GmbH (Worlée), AVANTIUM Renewable Polymers BV (ARNP) and KANSAI HELIOS (HELIOS). Another key aspect of Green-X is promoting of ‘green skills’ and labour market opportunities essential for transitioning to a circular economy and aligning with the European Green Deal and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through secondments, workshops, and co-organisation of activities, GREEN-X will acquire critical skills to bridge the gap between fundamental research and industrial applications. This includes scaling biobased monomers and polymers for packaging and coatings, enhancing chemical recycling technologies, and setting the stage for market penetration of bio-based polymeric materials. Moreover, GREEN-X will use existing research infrastructures and specialised know-how to support innovation in the circular economy. This collaboration ensures that the knowledge exchange and innovation ecosystem extends beyond the project’s duration, as outlined in the Sustainability Action Plan, contributing to development of a greener and more sustainable economy through breakthrough technologies and a well-trained workforce.
