Forces of Nature · Power! Through Forces of Nature

FP7Status: CLOSED1 May 201230 November 2012EU funding €65,000

As Europe and the world are faced with common global challenges, ranging from critical environmental changes to societal issues, the role of researchers becomes ever more important. From dealing with the current economic crisis to tackling changes in nature that may permanently alter our planet, it is clear that science and innovation will be critical in taking on those challenges through knowledge and creativity. In Iceland, the power of the forces of nature is very imminent in the daily lives of people, whether it is in the form of increased seismic and volcanic activity and receding glaciers, or the positive form of ample renewable energy. Icelandic researchers have gathered an enormous amount of knowledge and experience in dealing with the forces of nature. Moreover, through research, these forces have been” tamed” to create renewable energy sources for the benefit of the citizens. The main concept of the proposal is to focus on the role of researchers in the fields of sustainable energy and forces of nature, ranging from the natural sciences to the societal implications of natural disasters, and invite them to engage with the public at large. The objective is to influence a more positive public perception of researchers as persons by portraying their many facets and facilitate active dialogue between scientists and guests at Researchers’ Night.
