CarbonX is a fast growing startup focused on the development of an innovative eco-friendly and cost-effective anode active material, which is ready for mass production in existing industrial facilities. Founded in 2014 at TU Delft, CarbonX has raised €17 million, developing a patented, high-performance, and sustainable alternative to graphite for Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries. CarbonX® features a unique 3D crystalline network with improved electron conductivity and ion transfer, offering superior battery performance than existing graphite-based anodes. The company has validated scaling potential by producing CarbonX® at existing carbon black facilities, demonstrating a production capacity of over 20,000 tons annually. The EV market's increasing demand for graphite and Europe's dependency on imports, mainly from China, highlight the critical need for local, sustainable alternatives. CarbonX addresses these challenges with a low-temperature, continuous production process that significantly reduces CO2 emissions. The company's commercial strategy involves selling CarbonX® at €5-€6 per kg through partnerships with carbon black manufacturers, cell manufacturers, and EV OEMs, targeting Europe, the US, China, India, and South Korea. By 2030, the global market for carbon materials for batteries is projected to reach €16.8 billion. CarbonX aims to capture a €600 million market share, leveraging its sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. The project supports the EU's climate goals, contributing to reducing CO2 emissions by up to 10 Gton by 2050. CarbonX plans to create over 200 direct jobs and 350 indirect jobs by 2030. The ECo-AnodeX project positions CarbonX as a key player in the global transition to electric mobility and renewable energy, addressing critical supply chain and environmental challenges.
