CORES · Synthetic Microbial Consortia for Sustainable CO2-to-Resveratrol Biomanufacturing
Our continued reliance on land- and sugar-based biomanufacturing strains food systems, consumes vast freshwater resources, and contributes to climate change. This project offers a sustainable alternative by harnessing sunlight, seawater, and CO2 to produce resveratrol, a valuable nutraceutical, through an innovative microbial partnership. The project will combine a marine cyanobacterium, which fixes CO2 and secretes sugars, with a robust yeast capable of converting these resources into resveratrol. This dual-chamber microbial “green factory” will be developed as a proof of concept for a new class of CO2-to-biomanufacturing platforms. The expected impact extends beyond resveratrol: the approach demonstrates how marine biotechnology can reduce industrial dependence on land and freshwater, support the European Green Deal, and align with the MSCA Green Charter. The project is highly interdisciplinary, bridging synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, and bioprocess design.
