CanGoNano · A training network on glyconanomaterials as precision tools to unveil key insights on the triggering of the antigen presenting cells against cancer
Immunotherapy is at the frontier of cancer treatment, with vaccine prototypes in phase III clinical trials. However, guidelines for the selection of the optimal antigen format (mRNA vs peptide) to be used in vaccine formulations are still not available. The glycoscience-oriented CanGoNano DN has identified this gap and proposes for the first time a research & training & innovation action that aims to unveil the molecular mechanisms of immune system activation at the molecular level. Our innovative DN puts antigen presenting cells (APC) as the immune system hub to move forward on the rational selection of antigen formats towards next generation of cancer vaccines. Glyconanomaterials are precision tools for the controlled delivery of antigens to APC and will shed light on molecular mechanisms that rule APC activation according to antigen format. CanGoNano credibility and high quality are ensured by a partnership of experts in glycoscience & nanotechnology & immunology. 12 Academics, 6 SMEs & 1 clinical Institution encompass complementary & intersectoral expertise, and unique tools to train 14 doctoral candidates (DC). The combination of interdisciplinary & excellent science, industry know-how and clinical perspective will cover the entire process from fundamental insights to innovative solutions. CanGoNano will create a critical mass of uniquely skilled researchers in glyconanotechnology. We will train DC on the synergic potential of glycoscience & nanotech to provide the missing knowledge in cancer immunotherapy, and will equip DC with transferrable skills to be in an advantageous position for job opportunities in academia and industry. Deciphering the key interactions in APC activation expands the frontiers of knowledge and enables addressing key challenges in cancer immunotherapy. CanGoNano will strengthen the EU innovation capacity bringing new fundamental knowledge for the future development of precision anticancer vaccines to market and policy stakeholders.
