BIOWRAP is a CBE JU flagship project led by PPR to industrialize PapairWrap, the world’s first 100% paper-based alternative to plastic bubble wrap, designed for BIOWRAP is a CBE JU flagship project led by PPR to industrialize PapairWrap, the world’s first 100% paper-based alternative to plastic bubble wrap, designed for EN13432 compostability. Based on a patented technology that bonds paper layers with biodegradable nanocellulose fibres, PapairWrap delivers 1.6× better cushioning at cost parity while reducing packaging volume. The project will scale this breakthrough through a first-of-a-kind (FOAK) TRL 8 production facility, integrating innovations in fibre sourcing, paper engineering, coatings, and precision machinery. FOAK here means achieving simultaneously: a 100% paper structure with adhesive-free CNF bonding; an industrial 1200 mm line at 70–100 m/min; full repulpability in standard paper mills. The consortium spans the full value chain—paper producers, machinery builders, coating specialists, recyclers, LCA experts, universities, and global brand end-users—ensuring technical excellence, regulatory compliance, and rapid market uptake. BIOWRAP directly supports EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) targets by offering a scalable, circular solution to replace millions of square meters of plastic packaging, cut marine and landfill pollution, and reinforce Europe’s bio-based manufacturing competitiveness. The vision is to set a European benchmark for sustainable protective packaging by proving that innovation, sustainability, and cost-efficiency can align. Within five years, BIOWRAP aims to displace over 100 million m² of plastic bubble wrap, validating products in real-world use and shaping industry standards. By combining technical breakthroughs with industrial scale-up and strong market pull, BIOWRAP will accelerate adoption of circular, climate-friendly packaging, delivering lasting economic, environmental, and societal benefits across Europe.
