BIOMAPE · BIOmethane Market Acceleration and UPtake in Europe

HORIZONStatus: SIGNED1 November 202531 October 2028EU funding €1,999,792Call HORIZON-CL5-2024-D3-02

BIOMAPE (BIOmethane Market Acceleration and UPtake in Europe) aims to accelerate the production and use of biomethane across Europe, fostering market development and supporting EU’s energy transition. This objective will be achieved through three activity packages: Biomethane Certificates and Cross-border Trade; Biomethane Policy and Market Development; Biomethane Social Acceptability. BIOMAPE relates, within the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2023-2025 on Climate, Energy and Mobility, to the Call Sustainable, secure and competitive energy supply, addressing the topic HORIZON-CL5-2024-D3-02-10: Market Uptake Measures of renewable energy systems. The project methodology is built around four pillars: Multi-level Geographical Dimension, Social Acceptance, Policy Dimension, and Comprehensive Support and Transferability. These pillars address technical, social and regulatory challenges to drive biomethane market growth. Throughout these pillars, the project emphasises multistakeholder and multidisciplinary approaches as cross-cutting themes that ensure robust stakeholder engagement and the integration of diverse expertise at every stage. BIOMAPE will help to create biomethane registries for certificate management in five countries and facilitate cross-border trade, enhancing the transparency and efficiency of biomethane trade. By fostering improved and holistic biomethane policies, the project will contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in final energy consumption by 2030 and beyond. A strong focus on stakeholder engagement will include participatory activities, such as workshops, site visits, and the establishment of Biomethane Social Acceptability Groups in 8 countries, to address public concerns and improve community acceptance of biomethane technologies. In this way, BIOMAPE will lay the groundwork for a robust biomethane market across Europe, fostering international cooperation and knowledge transfer with non-European countries.
