HORIZONStatus: SIGNED1 June 202530 November 2028EU funding €4,992,189Call HORIZON-CL5-2024-D2-02

The proposed project aims to revolutionize battery technology by developing Generation 5 batteries based on lithium-sulfur (Li-S) chemistry to meet the growing demands of mobility applications focusing on heavy-duty vehicles. This project will address critical challenges in battery performance, safety, and sustainability by innovating in materials, cell design, and manufacturing processes. By employing advanced techniques such as Atomic Layer Deposition and Molecular Layer Deposition, we will enhance the protection of lithium-metal anodes, thus overcoming the issues of a dendrite Li growth and low coulombic efficiency, which have hindered the commercialization of Li-S batteries so far.The consortium will develop scalable and manufacturable surface coatings, integrating these advancements into Li-S batteries to achieve higher energy densities, extended cycle life, and improved safety profiles. The project will also focus on creating batteries with designs that facilitate end-of-life recyclability, aligning with the European Union's objectives for sustainable and circular battery technologies. To ensure the practical application and scalability of these technologies, the project will evaluate the compatibility of the new manufacturing processes with existing lithium-ion production infrastructure. This will include proof-of-concept demonstrations at the small pilot line scale, paving the way for future commercialization and widespread adoption of Gen5 battery technologies in the automotive sector and beyond. The outcomes of this project will contribute significantly to the European Union’s goals of achieving a sustainable, circular, and competitive battery ecosystem, thereby supporting the broader objectives of the European Green Deal and the transition towards a climate-neutral economy by 2050.
