ALT-PROACT · ALTernative PROteins – Awareness, Co-creation, Transformation

HORIZONStatus: SIGNED1 September 202630 September 2029EU funding €1,998,545Call HORIZON-CL6-2025-02

ALT PROACT aims to foster a socially inclusive, science based and culturally contextualised introduction of biotech based alternative proteins, supporting sustainable dietary shifts for citizens and society as a whole. The project contributes to Horizon Europe goals on raising citizen awareness of alternative proteins, improving understanding of their sustainability implications, counteracting misinformation and supporting education. ALT PROACT will create a collaborative and multilingual information programme that delivers clear, evidence based and culturally adapted communication. Awareness campaigns will be co created with stakeholders, tested through surveys and social media analysis, and amplified through schools, community initiatives and the Young Reporters for the Environment network. In parallel, the project will build trust through citizen forums, workshops and storytelling labs that allow open dialogue between scientists, policymakers, civil society and communicators, ensuring continuous feedback and adaptation of messages. Education is an important strand of the project, with new curricula, educator toolkits, online resources and pilot activities in several countries aligned with GreenComp and Education for Sustainable Development principles. ALT PROACT will also strengthen policy and governance by engaging regulators and public authorities in dialogue, mapping regulations, addressing fragmentation, and co creating communication standards. The process culminates in a validated package of policy recommendations endorsed at a high level final conference. By combining communication, education, trust building and governance support, ALT PROACT will equip Europe with the means to manage the introduction of biotech based alternative proteins in a transparent, participatory and socially robust way, advancing the Farm to Fork strategy and Food 2030.
